i am FYZAH TAJ—a lineage-trained Diviner, initiated gatekeeper, and ritualist, rooted in the dagara tradition in the lineage and legacy of elders malidoma patrice somé and sobonfu somé. I am also part of a community of healers learning kali, the ancient traditions of northern ghana, under the instruction of chief montana. i carry a spirit of transformation—guiding and opening portals of change for us to live in a new world.
before stepping fully into my divination practice, i spent eleven years working in specialized education, youth work, and community mental health. these experiences made me aware of the limitations of what is available to us for healing in the west due to our disconnection from animistic values and rituals. in my work, i bring together the healing wisdom of the five elements—fire, water, earth, mineral, and nature—to guide groups and individuals through profound collective change.
i stand in deep gratitude and solidarity with my elders and teachers who have guarded and sustained the traditions of west Africa, keeping alive traditions unbroken by colonization. these practices have helped me understand my gifts as a trans diviner, a role akin to that of a two-spirit medicine person. As a gujarati muslim, this is my reclamation of an animist role attempted to be defiled and erased by colonization and wahhabism.
we have always been here
we will always be here.
